Site Updates from 2002

Thursday, 2002.11.28

Happy Thanksgiving all! I finally finished Star Wars: Cloak of Deception by James Luceno, which I found rather slow and drawn out (1 star out of 4) although I enjoyed his Star Wars: Agents of Chaos books I & II and Darth Maul: Sabatour greatly. I have started Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J. K. Rowling (I thought it was about time...).

Thursday, 2002.11.21

Sorry for the lack of updates... There's nothing really new on the site, but I wanted to mention a couple of books I've read. First, there was Enterprise: What Price Honor? by Dave Stern (2.5 stars out of 4) and also Voyager: The Nano-Tech War by Steven Piziks (3 stars out of 4). Both were really enjoyable, but I want to give kudos to Steven Piziks for fleshing out the 7 of 9/Chakotay relationship which we missed during Voyager's run...

I am now reading Star Wars: Cloak of Deception by James Luceno, a pre-Phantom Menace book.

Tuesay, 2002.11.04

Well, I'm about 85% better, so I thought I'd go ahead and get this posted before too much time slipped by....

Stop by the Monthly Contest for your chance to win this month's prize!

And congrats go to Ioan Stefanovici of Canada who knew the answer to Last Month's Contest.

Friday, 2002.11.01

Due to an illness in the family (mine - the flu), I won't be choosing a winner or putting up the new contest until I feel better... So, you last minute surfers, here's your chance!

Lesser Evil I actually finished Deep Space Nine: Mission Gamma - Lesser Evil by Robert Simpson last week - I just didn't get to post it. If you like DS9, if you miss DS9, if you want more DS9, read the DS9 relaunce books! As for Lesser Evil, I thought it was the best of the four Mission Gamma books and now I have to wait until January for the next book - The Rising Son (just look at that cover! *grin*).

The Nanotech War

Now I'm reading Steven Piziks' Voyager: The Nanotech War. Although I haven't really been a big Voyager fan, this book is coming along nicely and filing in some much needed storyline gaps.

Back of the Book: Throughout human history, mankind has turned its goals and dreams toward exploration. With wagon trains, ships, satellites and starships, humanity has chosen to seek out the new frontier, to explore new worlds, and to go where no human has gone before-even to the furthest reaches of the Delta Quadrant. There, Captain Janeway and the crew of the Starship Voyager™ have discovered many strange and wondrous civilizations...but few as alien as the Chiar.

An advanced and scientiÞc people who have made great strides with nanotechnology, the Chiar expanded internally rather than externally. Every inch of their planet is crawling with the tiniest bits and pieces of artiÞcial intelligence imaginable, working in concert as the new lifeblood of this mechanical world. The people themselves are inseparable from their nanites, which layer their skin and provide extra limbs or senses as required.

Caught up in a bitter civil conþict, some Chiar will try to take advantage of their meeting with the crew of Starship Voyager. They imagine that their homegrown nanites can harness the incredible power of the deadly Borg, and instead set in motion an experiment that goes devastatingly out of control.

Ylesia I can't believe I have to wait until January for the next New Jedi Order book... Star Wars: The New Jedi Order - Ylesia by Walter Jon Williams was also excellent, buy just too short, but that's an e-book for you. But now I'm back to Star Trek with Deep Space Nine: Mission Gamma - Lesser Evil by Robert Simpson, which is the conclusion to the Mission Gamma series.

Lesser Evil

Back of the Book: Chaos erupts aboard Deep Space 9 as the crew begins a desperate search for a killer in their midst, catapulting Colonel Kira Nerys on a dangerous chase into the heart of the Federation. But the crime she seeks to avenge is part of a plot more ancient and far-reaching than anyone suspects, and that secret, if exposed, could divide worlds throughout the Alpha Quadrant.

Meanwhile, as the Starship Defiant makes its way back toward the wormhole and home to DS9, a startling discovery shakes Commander Elias Vaughn to his core and brings to light the truth behind the most tragic mission of his long life. As the crew struggles with the implications of what they've found, their captain's judgment comes into question... and casts doubt on the final outcome of their historic voyage through the Gamma Quadrant.

Destiny's Way It seems like the war is finally turning for the better, and Star Wars: The New Jedi Order - Destiny's Way by Walter Jon Williams, was an excellent continuation of the New Jedi Order saga. I can't believe it only took me a few days to read this book... And to continue with Mr. Williams, I am now reading his e-book novella Star Wars: The New Jedi Order - Ylesia (which takes place during Destiny's Way).

Ylesia

Back of the Book: Ripe for the plucking... That's Jedi Knight Kyp Durron's opinion about the planet Ylesia, home base of the so-called Peace Brigade, a group of traitors dedicated to hindering the war efforts of the New Republic and hastening the victory of the merciless Yuuzhan Vong. Kyp's plan calls for a lightning-fast strike, backed with overwhelming force, to destroy the Brigade's offensive capabilities and teach prospective traitors that betrayal carries a heavy price. But young Jacen Solo, still bearing the scars of his imprisonment by the Yuuzhan Vong, has a better idea: a daring raid into the heart of Ylesia's capital, with the objective of capturing the Brigade's top leaders-including the newly sworn-in President, Thrackan Sal-Solo, cousin to Jacen and his twin, Jaina.

But unknown to the Jedi and the New Republic forces, Supreme Overlord Shimrra of the Yuuzhan Vong has dispatched reinforcements to the Ylesia system. Instead of a swift surgical strike, Jaina, Jacen, Kyp, and their comrades are about to find themselves locked in a desperate battle for survival, with the odds stacked against them and time running out....

Thursday, 2002.10.17

Traiter Star Wars: The New Jedi Order - Traitor by Matthew Stover was by far one of the best New Jedi Order books out as of late. I've enjoyed all the NJO books, but I had trouble putting this one down. It didn't help that I was at my in-laws while I was reading it. Now I'm into Star Wars: The New Jedi Order - Destiny's Way by Walter Jon Williams. I can't wait to see what happens with Jacen!

Destiny's Way

Back of the Book: In the war against the ruthless Yuuzhan Vong, the fall of Coruscant leaves the New Republic divided by internal strife, and on the verge of bowing to conquest. But those who steadfastly refuse to consider surrender—Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Leia Organa Solo, and their children and comrades-in-arms—are determined to seize victory against overwhelming odds. And now, finally, there are signs that the tide may be turning in the New Republic’s favor.

After capturing crucial Yuuzhan Vong intelligence, Jedi fighter-pilot Jaina Solo prepares to lead a daring surprise strike against an enemy flagship. Meanwhile, Jaina’s brother Jacen—liberated from the hands of the enemy and newly schooled in an even greater mastery of the Force by the Jedi Knight Vergere—is eagerly poised to bring his unique skills to bear against the invaders. And on Mon Calamari, the New Republic’s provisional capital, the retired, ailing hero Admiral Ackbar has conceived a major tactical plan that could spell the beginning of a swift end for the Yuuzhan Vong.

Yet even as opposing squadrons face off in the depths of space, intrigue runs rampant: in the heated political race for Chief of State . . . in the shadows where Yuuzhan Vong spies plot assassinations . . . and in the inscrutable creature Vergere, a Jedi Knight whose allegiance is impossible to predict. And as Luke Skywalker sets about reestablishing the Jedi Council, the growing faction opposed to the ways of the Force unveil a terrifying weapon designed to annihilate the Yuuzhan Vong species. But in doing so, they may be dooming the New Republic to becoming the very thing it has sworn to fight against—and unleashing the power of the dark side.

Wednesday, 2002.10.16

I have added the clue to this month's Contest, so good luck!

Friday, 2002.10.11

This Gray Spirit Okay, now I have now finished Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Mission Gamma: Cathedral by Michael A. Martin and Andy Mangels - it was great - I felt as if I were watching it on TV! Kudos go to Martin and Mangels. Now I wish I didn't have to wait so long for Book Four of the Mission Gamma series. In the mean time, I'll be reading Star Wars: The New Jedi Order - Traitor by Matthew Stover.

Traiter

Back of the Book: After the capture of Coruscant, the mighty heart of the New Republic, a stunned galaxy fears that nothing can stop the Yuuzhan Vong. Still, that crushing defeat produces one small miracle: Jacen Solo is alive. Yet he can scarcely imagine himself in stranger circumstances.

The young Jedi Knight is in the care of Vergere, a fascinating creature of mystery and power, her intentions hard to fathom, her cruelties rarely concealed. But this master of inscrutable arts has much to teach the young Jedi ... for she holds the key to a new way to experience the Force, to take it to another level—dangerous, dazzling, perhaps deadly.

In the wrong hands, the tremendous energies of the Force can be devastating. And there are others watching Jacen’s process closely, waiting patiently for the moment when he will be ready for their own dire purposes. Now, all is in shadows. Yet whatever happens, whether Jacen’s newfound mastery unleashes light or darkness, he will never be the same Jedi again....

Monday, 2002.10.07

This Gray Spirit I have now finished the second installment of the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Mission Gamma series: This Gray Spirit by Heather Jarman. While Twilight made me feel as if I were stationed on DS9, This Gray Spirit put me in the characters heads and made me think the way they did. I thought it was an excellent follow-up to Twilight. It's too bad I'm now at the half way point in the Mission Gamma series...

Cathedral Now I'm reading Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Mission Gamma: Cathedral by Michael A. Martin and Andy Mangels (the same dynamic duo who wrote ST:TNG - Section 31 - Rogue, which I also really enjoyed).

Back of the Book: As a small child, Jules Bashir underwent illegal genetic enhancements that forever altered the natural course of his life. As an adult, ever since the day he discovered what his parents had done, Dr. Julian Bashir has wondered what he might have become if "Jules" had been allowed to live, certain he would never know the answer. But when the lure of a strange alien artifact in the Gamma Quadrant inexplicably begins to reverse Bashir's enhancements, the person he had thought long dead is given a second chance at life.

Ninety thousand light-years away, as the crew of Deep Space 9 tries to comprehend a shocking tragedy, Ro Laren makes a fateful decision about her life aboard the station. And although political maneuverings and failing diplomacy have already extinguished all hope of a real, lasting peace between Bajor and Cardassia, one man's search for his true calling may lay a new foundation for the future.

Twilight I just finished an awesome Star Trek book and I would highly recommend it to you: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Mission Gamma: Twilight by David R. George III, which is book one of a four book story arc. If you miss DS9 as I do, read Twilight and you will feel as if you had never left the station. (Although it would help if you read the DS9 books that take place after the series finale: Avatar, books I & II, Section 31: Abyss, and Gateways (book four of seven): Demons of Air and Darkness.)

This Gray Spirit Now I'm reading Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Mission Gamma: This Gray Spirit by Heather Jarman. Back of the Book: The political intrigue aboard Deep Space 9 escalates when Gul Macet's warship arrives at the station with an unexpected passenger. Cardassian Ambassador Natima Lang has returned to the station on a mission of hope, but it's one that will bring back old wounds and old ghosts. As tensions rise on all sides, Colonel Kira Nerys discovers that the line between friend and foe is narrower than she ever imagined.

Elsewhere, the crew of the damaged Starship Defiant forges an uneasy alliance with an unusual alien species--one whose unique biological makeup is the key to the balance of power in that region of the Gamma Quadrant. As the crew becomes ensnared in a web of deceit, Lieutenant Ezri Dax and Ensign Thirishar ch'Thane struggle to stave off a genocidal civil war.
